The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NITT), also referred to as National Institute of Technology, Trichy, formerly Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, is a public engineering and technology university located 20 km near the city of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, India. The institute was founded in 1964 to cater to the country's growing need for technological manpower.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=History of the Institute )〕 It is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India and is declared as an Institute of National Importance by Government of India under NIT Act. About 3,500 students are enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the institute.〔 The institute is located on an 〔 campus on the outskirts of Tiruchirappalli. ==History== The Regional Engineering College at Tiruchirappalli was founded in 1964 as a co-operative venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu to cater to the country's need for manpower in technology. The college was given autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. In 2003, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and was renamed National Institute of Technology.〔 The Chairperson of the institute is Ms. Kumud Srinivasan. Dr.Srinivasan Sundarrajan has been Director of the institute since July 2011. The institute is undergoing accelerated growth through the World Bank-funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP).〔 NIT Trichy celebrated its Golden Jubilee anniversary on July 19/20, 2014, with the President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee presiding over the event as the chief guest.
